Led by singer/songwriter David Gray, Vegas Nerve, named after the "vegus" nerve, which connects the heart to the head, maintains the same passionate purpose of the Idle Wilds, while adding less predictability to its pop conventions.

Killjoys Anonymous, a self-billed collection of "suburban fairy tales from the dark side," listens best as a song cycle, a concept album of sorts, in which each song fits into a larger mosaic of gloomy discontent. "You like to reason you're safe from harm," sings Gray, on the resonant "Safe From Harm," but "don't let the white fence fool you." Stylistically, Gray writes about despondence with the best of today's pop writers -- E from the Eels comes to mind -- and his yearning for answers that may not exist makes for a compelling journey through a truly discontented mind. - Bob Gulla.
